Your Size - How to measure for the perfect shirt fit

Getting the right fit is the most important and the hardest part of buying a shirt so we've put together some guidelines on how to measure you and a size chart for each of our different shirt styles – as each body fit varies slightly. Follow the steps below and work out which of our shirt styles is the closest match sizing-wise to your exact body measurements

Step 1: work out your COLLAR size

This is the most important measurement to get right, especially if you’re wearing a tie.

The best way to work it out is to measure around the fullest part of your neck using a tape measure and add half an inch.

You can also measure the collar of an existing shirt that fits you well – measure from the end of the button hole to the centre of the button. If the shirt is new, you’ll need to take off about ½" to get the collar size, if it has been washed and worn several times just take of ¼"

Step 2: work out your SLEEVE length

To measure your sleeve length, you’ll need a flat surface to measure the sleeve of an existing shirt that fits you well or a friend to help with a tape measure.

Shirt sleeves are measured from the centre back of the neck to the end of the cuff. If you are using one of our shirts, it will have a back yoke which has a seam in the back to give you the centre point of the back. If you don’t have that, you need to find the centre point and the best way to do that is to fold the shirt in half and mark the centre with a pin. Measure from the centre line or pin, along the top of shoulder, down the top edge of the sleeve to the end of the cuff and you will get your sleeve length.

Step 3: work out your CHEST and WAIST measurements

To establish the right shirt body fit for you, you need both of these measurements. Either get a friend to help you again with a tape measure, measuring first under your armpits to get your chest size and then around the narrowest point of your waist for your waist size.

Alternatively, button up a shirt that fits you right and measure the chest to start with from the point at which the seams cross at the underarm – measure that across and double the measurement to get your chest size. The waist measurement is the most important to get the right body fit – if you like your shirts to be a bit more fitted, you want a slightly closer fit at the waist. Look for the narrowest waist point on the shirt and measure across, double the measurement again to get your waist size.

Step 4: find the right T.M.Lewin shirt for you

Use your body measurements to work out which of our shirt styles will fit you best. Start from your collar size and see where the rest of your measurements sit in the sizing chart – do you need a short, regular or long sleeve? And do your chest and waist size work best with a regular fit shirt, a slim fit shirt or a fully fitted shirt. If, for example, you look at our Prince of Wales collar Regular Fit shirts and against your collar size and sleeve length, the waist size in the chart is bigger than your measurements, you will need a slim fit shirt or maybe even a fully fitted shirt.

Jacket - Chest Size

Measure the fullest part of the chest under the arms to get your chest measurement. You should have allow half an inch space at the front of the jacket as that allows you to see the curvature of the jacket and the silhouette. If the jacket pulls across the centre button, then it is too small and if the space at the front is more than half an inch, the jacket will look square and unstructured. Your suit lapel should also lie nice and flat – if it’s bowing, then that shows the jacket is too small.

Jacket - Sleeve Length

The edge of the jacket cuff should sit where the hand meets the wrist and the thumbline should always be uncovered.

Jacket - Length

Most of our suit jackets come in 3 different lengths, Short, Regular and Long. To work out the right length for you, use the rule of thumb – if you extend your arm and your thumb fully, the edge of the jacket should sit where the tip of your thumb is. An extra check for length is at the back – the bottom of the jacket should sit where the buttock line stops and the upper leg starts to drop.

Trousers - Waist Size

Suits normally work on a 6" drop, so if your chest size is 38", you subtract 6 inches to get your waist size, so in this case your waist size will normally be 32". You can also use a tape measure to measure your natural waistline. There should be half an inch (or the width of 3 fingers) between your body and your trouser waistband. You can mix and match all of our jacket and trouser sizes rather than being limited to the standard 6" drop rule so you can choose whatever size fits your exact measurements.

Trousers - Inside Leg Length

All our suit trousers are unfinished, so you will need to know your leg length for our free hemming service so that they can be hemmed to fit you perfectly. To work this out, measure from the crotch to the point at which your trouser is normally worn at the shoe. You should get a single break in the trouser just where the fabric hits the bridge of the shoe and at the back, the fabric should sit just on the top of the shoe heel – this shows that the leg length is correct.

Women's Shirts

Our women’s shirt sizing tends to come up fairly generous, so if you normally buy a size 14 on the high street, a size 12 will probably fit you in our shirts but the best thing is to try one on. Our free UK and US returns policy means you can do this without any risk and work out the right size for you. To measure yourself, follow the tips below:

Bust

Measure around the fullest part of your bust and across the shoulder blades.

Waist

Measure around natural waistline.

Women's Tailoring

To measure yourself for a suit jacket, the same rules apply as for a shirt – bust and waist. All our suit trousers are unhemmed so you need to measure your inside leg length and provide that when ordering so that we can get your trousers hemmed to the correct length.
